Injury update emerges on £250k-p/w Man City star before Napoli and Arsenal

A significant injury update has now emerged on a “world-class” Manchester City player ahead of the tough upcoming tests against Napoli and Arsenal.

Tricky fixtures on the horizon for Man City

Man City’s Champions League campaign is set to get underway this evening, taking on Napoli at the Etihad Stadium, with Kevin De Bruyne set to return for the first time since his 10-year spell at the club came to an end in the summer.

Speaking ahead of the game, Pep Guardiola has admitted it will be nice to renew acquaintances with the Belgian, who has made a flying start to life in the Serie A, scoring two goals in his opening three games.

Pep said: “Of course it’s nice for him to come back. [I’m excited] to see him after the game,”

“Not surprised [on his start in Italy]. He plays at that level, absolutely quick – the players at that level don’t need to adapt.

The Italian side have won their opening three league games this season, as they look to defend their Serie A crown, meaning tonight’s fixture will be a difficult test for City, and things don’t get any easier at the weekend.

With Guardiola’s side set to travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal this Sunday, the manager will need his best players available, and he has now been handed a major boost heading into the next two games.

According to a report from Manchester Evening News, John Stones took part in training on Wednesday, after missing out against Manchester United at the weekend, which has fuelled hopes he could be set to return soon.

It is unclear whether Stones will be available for selection this evening, but failing that, the defender’s presence in training means he could return for the Arsenal game, which would be a bonus for Pep heading into one of the toughest games of the season.

"World-class" Stones has struggled on the injury front

There can be no denying that the centre-back is a top player, having been lauded as “world-class” by England teammate Ezri Konsa, but his injury record is a real issue, having regularly spent time on the treatment table over the past three seasons.

The 31-year-old’s talent is reflected by the fact he is among the highest earners at Man City, raking in £250k-a-week, and his passing ability, which was on display in the Champions League against Real Madrid last season, means the former Everton man is perfectly suited to Pep’s system.

As such, the City boss will no doubt be hoping to have Stones back as soon as possible, so it is promising news that he has now returned to training.
