Aitana Bonmati reveals secret behind sensational winner against Germany as Spain prepare to face England in Euro 2025 final

Aitana Bonmati has revealed that her stunning extra-time winner against Germany in the Euro 2025 semi-final was no fluke, crediting Spain's preparation and goalkeeping coach for spotting a weakness in German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger's game. Her strike sent La Roja into their first-ever European Championship final, where they’ll face England in a World Cup final rematch.

Bonmati scored a brilliant goal in the 113th minute, firing from a tight angle to beat Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger. The shot looked like a cross at first, but squeezed in at the near post. It secured a 1-0 win for Spain and ended their long-standing winless run against Germany.

Speaking to the media after the game, Bonmati said: "Yes, the truth is that we had studied it. Well, Marisa, the goalkeeper coach, had told me that she (Berger) made certain movements and that sometimes she left the near post clear and that's how it was. I didn't think about (taking that shot) twice because I didn't want it to reach penalties.

"Scoring in a game like this one is super special and if I can help the team writing history, it's very special. For the first time we have beaten Germany with the women's national team, and for the first time we are in the final of the Euros. We have written history."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Spain have reached their first Women's Euro final, continuing their golden run after winning the 2023 World Cup. Bonmati’s moment of brilliance came after a tough start to the tournament, having recently recovered from viral meningitis. Her performance underlined Spain’s depth, tactical detail, and mental resilience.
